Can I Use VoIP With Satellite?
Over the last two or three years, several companies have moved forward to provide VoIP for satellite Internet users. VoIP with satellite is available, but just as with any satellite Internet service, some additional hardware and software will be required. In particular, the telephone you will use for satellite VoIP calls will need to be leased or purchased through the satellite VoIP provider you sign up with.
VoIP service is provided through the same system of satellites used for broadband satellite Internet, such as Hughes Electronics and Skyframes. If you are happy with the quality and speed you are getting with your current satellite Internet provider, then you will most likely experience the same level of quality while using VoIP over satellite.
One challenge for satellite VoIP is latency. In order to adjust for this latency, satellite VoIP providers require you to use special hardware and software solutions. Standard VoIP solutions, which might work fine over DSL or cable, simply don't work as well over satellite because of the adjustments needed for latency. For the most part, latency issues with satellite VoIP won't effect the quality of your voice communication because your satellite provider will use prioritized data packets (bandwidth set aside specifically for VoIP data) and advanced voice compression technology to adjust for any latency.
