What Options Exist For High Speed Internet In Your Area?

Although the form above will give you offers from Internet providers by zip code, the truth is that no form like this is 100% accurate. ISPs are constantly upgrading and changing their service offerings and many of their databases are out-of-date. If you are not satisfied with the results of the form, then please use this guide to understand your choices for broadband.

Search For Internet Providers By Zip CodeStep #2 - To find out your options for High Speed Internet, all you need to do is ask yourself some questions and the answers will tell you what types of Internet providers are available in your area:

Question #1 - Who is your cable television provider?

Question #2 - Who is your phone service provider?

The answer to those questions determines who can provide broadband Internet in your area, whether it be Cable Internet Service (your cable TV company) or DSL Internet Service (your landline phone company). So, first call or email your cable TV provider and ask if they offer broadband cable Internet to your address, then call or email your landline (not wireless) telephone provider. These are the companies who can confirm if cable, DSL or fiber optic Internet is available for your exact address.

The Availability Of Satellite Internet Service

Step #3 - If cable or DSL are not available in your area, then satellite is probably your only other option for high speed Internet. When it comes to Satellite Internet Service . . .

Question #3 - Do you live in the 48 continental United States?

If you do, then you almost certainly can get broadband satellite Internet, which is about as fast as basic DSL. HughesNet Satellite and WildBlue Satellite are the two primary satellite Internet providers in the United States. Both of these companies are currently able to offer good deals for new customers with funds provided the Recovery Act Program.

So, just ask yourself the three simple questions listed above and you will know which ISPs offer cable, DSL or satellite Internet in your area.

Exceptions To DSL, Cable & Satellite

Yes, there are exceptions, but they are few. The main ones include:

  • Fixed Wireless Providers - WISPs (Wireless Internet Service Providers) are a growing type of broadband that is available to your home. Download speeds of this type of service compare to basic DSL, ranging from 1 Mbps up to 6 Mbps right now. The main example of a fixed wireless Internet provider is Clearwire, available in over 70 U.S. markets.
  • Municipal Broadband - As of May 2011, over 130 cities and towns in America have created publicly owned & operated fiber networks. Some of the broadband stimulus money from the government is going towards assisting municipal ISPs. Only your local municipal government can tell you if they have plans. Examples are Chattanooga, TN and Kansas City, KS.
  • Broadband Resellers - There are resellers who bundle their customer support and software tools with the DSL or cable provided by your phone company or cable company, but all they do is resell it to you and act as your point of contact. The companies which own the phone lines and cable lines running to your house actually provide the service. The best example of this kind of broadband reseller is EarthLink.

And, of course, there is always Dial Up Internet Service, :(
