Test Your Cable Modem Speed To Find Out Where You Stand
by Richard Thomason - July 3rd, 2010

If you use a cable Internet provider, you might simply want to check your speeds to be sure you are getting what you are paying for. Other times, your connection may be slower than expected, so you need to test your cable modem speeds as a first step at diagnosing connection issues or other possible problems.

Many websites also offer free Cable Internet speed tests that test the latency, upload and download speeds of data transferred between the computer and the server from which the test is conducted. Each website has a set of host servers from which the data transfer comes from and they are all trusted.

Free Cable Internet Speed Tests

When you run cable modem speed tests, it is a good idea to run the test at least three times to get a base average speed from which you can determine if the connection is set properly or not. This is because cable Internet speeds can vary throughout the day.

Speedtest.net - This is one of the more popular websites for speed testing. This site utilizes thousands of servers all over the world. Choose the server closest to your present location and the test begins. After the transfer of data completes, the results are displayed along with the average transfer rate.

DSLReports.com - This website offers testing of upload speed and download speed for all broadband connections. It has about ten servers to choose form and they are all located in the US. The results display along with a graph of previous test results and average speed throughout all of them. They also offer a list of other servers and speed testing all over the world.

SpeedGuide.net - This website offers speed tests hosted on different servers around the world. While there are not as many, there are an adequate amount so you are not too far away that it will skew he results. The testing offers results for download speeds, upload speed, and latency of data transfer as well as details on what kind of service you are using and where it comes from.

Tweaking Your Cable Internet Speed

After speed testing is completed, you might find you need to tweak your connection settings to get optimized results. Most TCP/IP Optimizers are downloadable utilities, which you install and run on your operating system.

SG TCP Optimizer: This TCP/IP utility, offered by SpeedGuide.net, is downloadable although it does not require installation to function. All you need to do is download it and click the run button. After it initializes, enter the required information so it can run and make tweak recommendations. you may opt for downloading the offered documentation, so you do not enter any wrong information.

TweakTest: This online utility that is available from DSLreports.net, one of the more popular websites to run a tweak test. This is a good option if you do not like to install many utilities or programs on your computer. This utility is Java based so you will need to have Java enabled for it to work. Just click the start button and it will start a speed test. After it finishes, click the “Results” button and you will need to enter the information required which included computer’s operating system connection type and advertised speed. It then analyzes the information it received from the speed test, pits it against the tweak test results and makes its suggestions based on the outcome of both.

Companies such as Comcast High Speed Internet have their own TCP/IP optimizers, so it is recommended that you use the one provided by your Internet service.
