This is because web pages are getting heavier as more websites are having some multimedia content in their pages. The Internet has now become indispensable in homes, schools, or the workplace, and it is important that users are able to get things done on the Internet in a most efficient manner. Since some Internet Service Providers do not offer the advertised bandwidth, an Internet speed test is the fastest way of finding out your true Internet speed. A faster Internet speed equates to faster download and upload of your data. There are a number of factors that can influence the Internet connection speed. Some of these include the distance of your computer from the ISP's central server, the number of users who are logged in at a given point in time, and the hardware & software settings of your computer. Pinging Your Internet ConnectionOne of the simplest methods of checking your Internet speed is by "pinging". The ping program tests the status of your network Internet Service, and it informs you about any loss in data packets that your connection may be experiencing. To run the Ping program, click on "Start" and select the "Run" command from the menu. After that, you have to type "ping", and then, the IP address or the domain name. Although the most accurate way of finding out your true Cable Internet or DSL Internet connection speed is by using an online speed testing service, a modem Internet speed test should be your first step in your quest for a faster Internet connection, if you are using a modem to connect to the Internet. A modem comes in two types, namely the 56K ( V.90 ) modem that is capable of transforming data at 56,000 bits per second, and a 28.8 ( V.34 ) modem which can transform data at 28,000 bits per second. A speed test will accurately measure the average data throughput by evaluating the amount of time taken by your computer to load an image. After that, it will display a chart that compares your Internet provider's speed result with certain ISDN standards. Internet Speed TestsThere are several reliable speed test sites that you can use. Some of these include Speakeasy Speed Test , Intel Broadband Speed Test , Bandwidth Place Speed Test , MSN Internet Speed Test , and the Wugnet Speed Test. Most of them have a simple interface that allows you to run your test without any hassle. Once you are on their websites, you will find a "Speed Test" button. Clicking on it will initiate the Internet speed test. After the test is done, the result will be clearly displayed, showing your exact upload and download connection speeds. Some of the speed test sites also provide you with additional information such as the quality of service of your Internet connection, max pause, and the round trip time. However, you should bear in mind that most speed test sites require Java. Hence, it is a good idea to install Java before you run an Internet connection speed test. Also, do not forget to close all applications on your computer before you hit the "Start Speed Test" button. Running an Internet speed test will definitely give you a clearer picture of your current Internet speed. And if the results of the test point to a sluggish Internet speed, it is probably time to change your present subscription plan. |
